CBS Television Stations implemented the News Apprenticeship
Program in 2005. The purpose of the Program is to develop strong newsroom leadership skills for those interested in BEHIND THE SCENES Editorial opportunities, as well as to attract a diverse pool of talented individuals who will contribute to our story selection and execution. In 2018, we are excited that WJZ-TV will be participating in the News Apprenticeship Program.
The Program will expose candidate to the various disciplines of broadcast journalism, from the assignment desk to newscast writing and producing, promotion writing, and news editing to special projects. Apprentice will be working side by side with News Department professionals, learning their craft and gaining valuable experience and knowledge. This is truly a unique opportunity for a recent college graduate who has a serious interest in pursuing a career in TV News. We are seeking individuals who are looking to work BEHIND THE SCENES with an ultimate goal to be part of a Newsroom management team. This is not a position for a candidate who wants to be on camera.
Each Apprenticeship will be for a six-month duration, which may be extended, based on individual circumstances. Candidates will be paid an hourly rate. Stations will make every effort to find employment for those candidates who successfully complete the Program, either within the station or at another CBS Television station. However, successful completion of the Program does not necessarily guarantee future employment . Apprentices will be considered "at will" employees and the Program can end at any time during the apprenticeship period at the station's sole discretion.

Qualifications: Required:
* Candidates must be a recent graduate (Fall 2017 or Spring 2018)
* Only those individuals who are highly motivated and are self-starters need apply.
* While a degree in communications or journalism is not required, strong writing skills are essential. Candidates will be required to take a broadcast writing test and also must submit a one-page, single spaced essay on "Why I've Chosen Broadcast Journalism as a Career." Application submitted without essay will not be considered.
* Participation in college TV Stations, radio, newspaper or literary magazines will be taken into account.
Preferred:
* Membership in any professional organizations or journalist associations preferred.
